Welcome to Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral!

Home  /  Welcome to Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral!

Whether you are a lifelong parishioner, new to the area, returning to the practice of the Catholic faith, or simply visiting our beautiful church from another faith tradition or another part of the country, I am grateful that you have found your way here.

One of the first things visitors notice is our imposing bell towers, which majestically rise above Canal Boulevard, reminding us to lift both our hearts and minds to God. While our present church building is just over a century old, the parish community of St. Joseph has gathered to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy and to receive and live the Sacraments in the community of Thibodaux for more than 200 years.

The first Catholic settlers built a humble wooden church along Bayou Lafourche near the site of our present cemetery on Louisiana Highway 1. That modest church was eventually replaced by a brick structure before the magnificent edifice in which we worship God today was constructed. Our church stands as a testament to the faith of the generations who came before us.

While many people know Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral for its striking beauty and rich history, we are much more than a beautiful and historic building. We are a living community of disciples striving to know Christ more deeply, to love Him more faithfully, and to make Him known through lives of prayerful service.

As the Co-Cathedral and the Mother Church of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, we have the privilege of serving not only our parish family but also the wider diocesan community. Yet our mission remains the same: to lead people to an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ. Everything we do–from the reverent celebration of the Sacred Liturgy to faith formation, charitable outreach, and fellowship–is directed toward helping people grow in holiness and discover the joy of living as disciples of the Lord Jesus.

I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our parish, our ministries, and the many opportunities to grow in the Catholic faith. More importantly, I invite you to join us for Holy Mass. There is no better way to experience the beating heart of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral than by gathering with us around the altar of the Lord, where Christ continues to nourish His people through His Word and His Sacraments, especially the Most Holy Eucharist.

Whether you are visiting for a day or searching for a parish to call home, know that you are always welcome here. I look forward to meeting you and praying with you as, together, we continue to build up the Kingdom of God.

May Saint Joseph, our patron and protector of our church, intercede for you and your family. May Saint Valerie, patroness of our city, watch over you and keep you safe.

In the faithful service of Our Lord, I remain,

Very Reverend Father R. P. J. Bruce

Rector, Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral
